Bob Brown
Ultra Distance Triathlete
With No Limits!

Thinking of entering a Sprint Triathlon? Bob Brown can give you advice on that! Thinking of entering an Ultra Distance event? Bob Brown can help you with that as well.

In fact any event that involves the swim, run, bike stages, or running huge distances, Bob will probably have done it and certainly be able to give you first hand knowledge of how to tackle it.

Jan and I first met Bob at our local gym where he was presenting the prizes at a cross training event! He immediately came across as a very modest and unassuming person. In fact, had it not been for reading the local papers we certainly would not have known that less than a year before he had completed what is commonly regarded as the toughest endurance race in the world, The Deca Ironman!

This was at the World Deca-Ironman Championships in Monterrey, Mexico and consisted of a 24 mile swim, 1120 mile cycle ride followed by a 262 mile run. At the time the race took a tremendous toll both physically and mentally. It is testament to his mental strength that, rather than put him off ultra distance events and feats, it actually spurred him on.

After the gym event we became good friends and often went running together along the Cornish cliffs near Lands End.

Fairly soon Bob had the 'challenge bug' again and decided to attempt the Lands End - John O'Groats - Lands End cycling record.

Together with three other local lads I was privileged to be asked to act as support crew for the attempt. This was the first chance to see Bob in action first hand and I have never seen so much determination and motivation in a person.

Bob set an impressive time of 6 days, 20 hours to complete the 1800 mile route covering the length of Britain, Wales and Scotland and back again. This was the record at the time.

This was the first time I had seen sleep deprivation combined with physical effort to such an extent. It made me realise what the human body is capable of, but the mental effort involved cannot be understated.

Unfortunately, due to work commitments, we were unable to support him in the Trans Australia race of 2001.

Since then I have crewed for Bob at the European Triple Ironman Championships at Grenoble and Jan and I supported him along the Grand Union Canal in the 145 mile race of 2007.

Without question though, the most memorable experience of all is when Jan and I were the support crew for Bob in The Run Across America Race of 2004.

True to form, Bob saw a challenge in it for us insisting that Jan and I were to share cycling the distance for the whole trip.

Bob went on to win the race and still holds the record for the race which covered a 3100 mile run from Huntington Beach, California on the West coast to New York on the east completed in 71 days (that's the equivalent of running 2 marathons a day for 71 days!) with no rest day.

Amongst many of Bob's other achievements are five successive Hawaii Ironman finishes and second place in the World Triple Ironman Championships in 1995.

If you would like to read an incredibly moving and motivating book then get a signed copy of 'The Road To Deca' by Bob Brown.

Bob has given many motivational speeches at dinners, functions and team building exercises, including to the Great Britain Rugby League team.

Perhaps this is an idea for your next company gathering!
